WHAT IS FELT?
Felt is a textile material of the non-woven type (NWT - non-woven textile) in sheet form that is not made by weaving warp and weft together, but rather by conglomerating layers of animal hair (usually wool) and/or a similar synthetic material through steam and pressure.
Felt is highly valued in sewing for its lightness and malleability, which is why it is often used in skirts, jackets, carpets, and, of course, hats and/or wide-brimmed hats. To this end, it is usually mounted on a lining that provides some structure.
Humans began using felt before woven clothing. It is unknown how this discovery was made, but it is speculated that the idea of this material came from prehistoric men noticing that animals, when rubbing against trees, left matted and clumped hair stuck to them.
In any case, it is known that the first to use this fabric were the nomadic tribes of Central Asia, Russia, and Turkey. They used it not only for clothing but also to build their huts, since felt is very light, insulating, and resistant to water and wind.
WHAT ARE NON-WOVEN FABRICS OR NWT?
A non-woven fabric or non-woven textile (NWT) is a fabric that is made by bonding fibers together into a network by mechanical, thermal, or chemical processes. As the name suggests, these fabrics are not woven, i.e., they lack warp or weft.
Because they have no threads, they cannot fray, which makes them a very suitable material for making garments and accessories. They look like a sheet, similar to a veil, batting, or felt. They are not very durable, so they are used to reinforce other fabrics or with linings. The most common materials to make them are wool and acrylic.
