WHAT IS BRASS?

Brass (also known as orichalcum) is a man-made metal resulting from the alloy of copper and zinc, often used to create decorative objects and jewelry, since its brightness and color are similar to gold, and therefore, very striking. It is also used in lock parts and valves, for plumbing and electrical components, or to build musical instruments such as trumpets, bells, or cymbals.

The earliest evidence of brass dates back to prehistoric times, although at that time it was made with a mixture of copper and calamine, a natural source of zinc. The Romans also produced it through the cementation process. However, it was not until the end of the Middle Ages that the existence of zinc was discovered, and therefore, the true nature of the brass formula.

The proportions of copper and zinc in the alloy can change the properties of brass, such as mechanical characteristics, fusibility, molding abilities, forging, stamping, machining, and density.

Brass does not rust or corrode in contact with saltwater, which is very useful for making ships and fishing gear. It also has antimicrobial properties (it disinfects itself), which is why it's used for making door knobs in hospitals.

Brass does not produce sparks upon impact, which is quite handy for creating containers for flammable compounds and tools used near flammable gases.

WHAT ARE BRASS MESHES?

In cold, brass ingots can be transformed into sheets of varying thicknesses, rods, or cut into strips to be later stretched and thus create wires of differing thickness. That's the first step in making brass meshes.

Next, the wires are interwoven to create a warp of brass that is almost as malleable as any other fabric.

The brass wire mesh can be used to decorate building facades, staircases, or lampshades. Given its strong aesthetic effect, it can also be used to decorate dresses and, of course, hats or headdresses. This is why we include this curious material in our catalog.
