STUDS FOR CLOTHING AND MANY TYPES OF RIVETS

Sewing involves a varied range of materials and tools, all of which can undoubtedly be found in Artipistilos. Probably two of the lesser-known, yet no less useful, are studs for clothing and the various types of rivets that are available on the market.

WHAT ARE STUDS?

Studs are a metal fastening element used to join two materials together. They consist of a head (which can have multiple shapes, as mentioned earlier) and several steel, iron, or aluminum points that, once nailed into the materials, can be bent so that the stud clings to them.

Given the great resistance of studs, they are widely used in upholstery and furniture, although they are also very useful for making footwear, bags, and, of course, hats.

Studs are a variant of the well-known thumbtacks, also called 'tacks.' These have a single spike in the center and a circular head and are commonly used to fix paper or cardboard on cork boards. They were invented by the German watchmaker Johann Kirsten in 1903.

There are two types of thumbtacks: the classic, consisting of a short metal point and a flat or oval metal, circular head; and the American, which has a more prominent circular head and is usually made of plastic.

WHAT ARE RIVETS?

Rivets are a metal fastening element used to join two materials together and, unlike the previously mentioned studs, do not include any spikes. They consist of a cylindrical tube called 'shank' and a head at the end, wider than the tube.

Rivets are generally applied with a pneumatic tool. To join the materials, the rivet is fired from one side while holding a die with the shape of the rivet head on the opposite side. When the rivet strikes the die, the end of the shank takes the form of the head, thus fixing the pieces.

This method has been used for a long time but continues to be very important as an assembly technique thanks to the development of automation techniques. Some products that are manufactured with rivets include automobiles, household appliances, furniture, all kinds of hardware, and some fashion products that use leather and other hard materials.

WHAT IS A HABERDASHERY?

A haberdashery, also called a notions shop, is a store where sewing, knitting, and craft products are sold, as well as certain types of clothing.

Haberdasheries are usually small shops located in city centers, suburban neighborhoods, and shopping malls. They tend to sell sewing items, textile replacements, fabric trimmings, hair accessories, costume jewelry, tools (like needles, bobbin lace, crochet, cross-stitch...), accessories for dressing, baby clothes, lingerie, and men's underwear.
