WHAT ARE SNAP BUTTONS?
Snap buttons are a type of button made of two round metal pieces, one with a groove and another with a head shaped to fit into that groove. As the name suggests, they are fastened by pressure.
To add this type of button to a garment, you need to sew or rivet them onto the opposite sides of the clothing you want to close. To ensure that the button head correctly fits into the groove and doesn't come out unless force is applied, a piece of lateral resistance is often added.
The first pressure buttons appeared at the end of the 19th century. They were initially used to fasten men's underwear, but soon after were introduced to women's clothing. At the beginning of the 20th century, a spring was added around the head as a design improvement to make them easier to fasten and unfasten.
WHAT IS A BUTTON?
A button is an accessory included on many items of clothing (shirts, jackets, blazers) and serves to fasten them or adjust them to the body. The button is fastened by passing it through a buttonhole of the same size as the diameter of the button, usually found at the other end of the garment or the pocket.
The vast majority of them are round and flat. Historically, they have been made from metal, wood, mother-of-pearl, bone, ceramic, or resin, although nowadays, they are more commonly made from plastic.
However, there are many different types of buttons with distinct appearances. Some have two or four visible holes, others have a single hole on the back, and others have no holes, like duffle coat toggles. These differences are also seen in textures and finishes. For example, many buttons are covered with the same fabric as the main garment.
Some of the most popular types of buttons are:
- Shank button, for coats and jackets.
- Rivet button, more durable than the former because it is metallic and very common on jeans.
- Perforated button, for shirts and blouses.
- Toggle button, for bedding.
- Loop or toggle button, like those on duffle coats.
- Pressure snap button, durable and easy to fasten, especially for children.
