WHAT IS PORCELAIN?

Porcelain is a type of white, dense, brittle, hard, waterproof, and heat-resistant ceramic. It has been used to make tableware, vases, lamps, sculptures, and all sorts of ornamental objects. It is often confused with fine earthenware.

This material was invented in China, where it was called tzu. Although the first mentions of porcelain date back to the Tang Dynasty (618 AD to 907 AD), it is estimated that it was discovered much earlier, probably during the Han Dynasty (206 BC to 220 AD).

Porcelain products were highly coveted in the West, which is why their trade moved a lot of money for centuries. Many tried to discover the secret formula for its manufacture, most in vain.

The first time a similar functional product to porcelain was made in the Renaissance, specifically during the time of the Medici. This material is known as soft-paste porcelain or tender porcelain. The English improved the formula and created a finer and lighter porcelain.

Between 1708 and 1709, hard-paste porcelain was discovered in Europe, specifically in what is now Germany by the chemist Friedrich Böttger. This man not only managed to recreate the formula with enormous precision but also the method of firing (from 1300 to 1400 degrees for twelve consecutive hours).

WHAT IS COLD PORCELAIN?

There are many types of porcelain currently in existence. Cold porcelain is a variant made from cornstarch and white glue that imitates its appearance once it is dry, although it does not contain the same components.

Its composition, consistency, smoothness, and malleability make it very similar to modeling clay. This is why it is widely used as crafting material at home or in school. It dries well in the open air and also dissolves with heat or water.

Many components of cold porcelain are biodegradable, so lemon juice or sodium benzoate are useful to prevent the proliferation of bacteria and fungi. In any case, it is important to keep it tightly sealed in a closed place.

If it dries out, you can soften it with a little water. If you add too much, the material becomes sticky, but you can counteract it with cornstarch or vaseline. To join pieces of already dried cold porcelain, our recommendation is to use white glue.
