WHAT ARE NATURAL FIBERS?

Natural fibers are fragments, strands, or hairs of natural origin that can be spun to make yarns or cords. When these fibers are woven, the resulting material is called 'fabric'; when the fibers are matted, the resulting material is called 'non-woven fabric' or 'TNT'.

The only natural fiber that constitutes a thread in itself is silk. All the others are manufactured, as we have mentioned before. The oldest remnants of natural fibers worked by humans date back to the Upper Paleolithic, about 30,000 years ago.

Depending on their origin, natural fibers are classified into two groups: animal and vegetable. The former come from the fur of animals or their skin (leather). The latter, from the fruits, seeds, stems, or leaves of plants and are mainly composed of cellulose.
