ABACA, JUTE AND DECORATIVE FIBERS
ABACA AND JUTE
WHAT IS ABACA FIBER?
The abaca fiber (also known as Manila hemp) is a type of fabric highly valued for its strength and durability. It is extracted from the homonymous plant, which is native to the Philippine Islands. It has very different uses, mainly for making tea bags, banknotes, wrapping paper, filters, or the well-known Manila envelopes.
It is also used to manufacture ropes. In fact, abaca ropes are in high demand because abaca is not only resistant to tension but also to deterioration caused by fresh or saltwater, wind, and sun. This material was introduced very early in the galleons after Magellan and Elcano's arrival to the islands in 1521.
Beyond the aforementioned, abaca has also been used in the manufacturing of hats.
WHAT IS JUTE?
What is jute? It is a fabric from the same name plant and cultivated in tropical regions. It can be easily bleached and dyed and is slightly less resistant than linen or hemp.
It has a certain stiffness and its natural color is beige, making it ideal for adding a rustic touch to your hat-making projects. Moreover, it is 100% biodegradable, so if you like to make your hats with environmentally friendly fabrics, jute is undoubtedly a good choice.
Jute has good tensile strength and low extensibility, which means it breathes better than other fabrics. It is an excellent acoustic insulator and does not irritate the skin, so don't hesitate to use it in dresses. It also has insulating properties.
With jute thread, thicker threads are made with which jute bags, jute rugs, jute rope and much more are woven (mats, tapestries, linoleum...).
