WHAT ARE BERETS?

A beret is a warm garment for the head. Berets are designed to cover the head leaving a small space between the scalp and the fabric of the beret of about 2 centimeters. It fits using an adorned edge or a semi-rigid band. Some variants have a decorative tassel at the center.

This accessory has been widely used among the working classes of some European countries, especially in Spain, France, and the United Kingdom (in the latter case, it is part of the traditional outfit of the Scottish Highlands). It is also very common in the military dress of many countries.

The popularization of berets in urban environments occurred at the beginning of the 20th century, when it became associated with the French artistic bohemia (specifically Parisian) and later with the existentialist aesthetic.

There are various types of berets depending on the country of origin. Below, we will mention the most well-known:

  • The English beret, also known as the Flat Cap beret, is narrow and flat with a visor to protect the eyes from the sun. Another very similar one is the Duckbill beret, more rounded than the Flat Cap.
  • The Irish beret or Hatteras beret has an even more rounded shape than the previous ones, it has more flight in the back and has a button on the top from which 8 "wedges" of fabric branch out.
  • The Spanish beret is circular and solid-colored, with black being the most predominant. The flight of the beret varies depending on the region. Well-known are those from the Carlists and Requetés, which typically featured a tassel.
  • The French beret or faluche is similar to the Spanish, but can be tilted or placed backwards according to the wearer's preference.

WHAT ARE HATS?

Hats are a round garment, made of fabric or knit, worn to cover, warm, or adorn the head. Hats lack a visor or wings, so they do not serve to protect the eyes from sunlight. The most popular types of hats are wool hats, which are often decorated with a pompom.

The origin of hats is uncertain, although there is evidence that they began to be used in antiquity. The Egyptians, for example, wore a type of fabric hat called ‘claf’. In some Persian bas-reliefs, men can be seen wearing a type of hat inclined forward, similar to the Phrygian cap of the Greeks.
