WHAT IS A HEADBAND?
A headband is an accessory shaped like a half-crown that is used to keep hair back, away from the face, preventing it from being an annoyance with movement or on windy days. Headbands are, at the same time, a very popular feminine aesthetic accessory.
Humans have been using headbands for millennia:
- By the end of the Neolithic period, affluent people from tribes such as the Phoenician, the Mycenaean, or even the Celtiberian occasionally wore simple headbands made of gold or silver with different patterns or cutouts.
- Many Greek and Roman women used to wear a band around their head, simple or embellished, with the ends tied or linked behind the head, as a headband.
- Some women in Mesopotamia adorned their hair with one or several layered headbands with all sorts of pendants, decorations, and insets, while men gathered their hair with a band from which rows of beads dangled.
WHAT IS A TIARA?
A tiara is a type of crown which, unlike the latter, is not closed at the back, making it more similar to a headband in shape. However, a headband has a practical function (to hold the hair), while tiaras are strictly decorative.
Tiaras have been worn by kings, nobles, and emperors for millennia as a sign of power and status. In more modern times, and especially since the 19th century, tiaras have become a valuable accessory that the upper middle class could afford to wear.
Today there is a wide range of tiaras at prices suitable for all budgets. Its use is quite common in weddings and all kinds of formal events.
