WHAT IS A RING?

A ring, also known as a band or signet, is an accessory in the shape of a hoop that is often decorated with various types of ornaments and is worn on the fingers. There are also smaller rings intended for toes.

Rings can consist of up to 3 parts:

  • The band is the circular part that goes around the finger. To ensure the correct size for the wearer, the band should offer some resistance when sliding onto the finger to prevent the ring from falling off when moving the hand, particularly at the joints between the middle and proximal phalanges. Once in place, the band should not feel tight, as this could hurt when fingers swell with heat. Moreover, this would make it difficult to remove the ring. If you cannot remove it, the best solution is to apply water and soap to the area.
  • For those rings that have an ornament, the chaton is the smoothed part of the band on which the ornament is placed. When the chaton has no ornament, it often has letters or figures engraved on it.
  • The ornament, located on the chaton, can be of multiple types, from a piece of metal craftsmanship to a gem or precious stone set within. Gems are often decorated with deeply elaborate engravings and reliefs.

Humans have been using rings since learning to manipulate metals (bronze, copper, gold, silver, iron...). Although wearing this accessory is very common today and can be obtained at a very low price, for centuries it was an expensive product and a status symbol that indicated, among other things, social class, profession, or belonging to a specific dynasty or family.

Some types of rings that have been widely used throughout history include:

  • The Fisherman's ring. Typically worn by the Popes of Rome and used as a seal to certify the authenticity of papal briefs and bulls.
  • Cardinal's ring. Awarded to newly ordained cardinals in the consistories as a sign of belonging to the Sacred College of Cardinals.
  • Bishop's ring. Newly ordained bishops receive this ring as a sign of the covenant they make with the Church.
  • Engagement ring. This is the ring given by a man to his partner when proposing marriage. It often includes some type of set precious stone.
  • Wedding band. This is the ring exchanged by couples during the wedding ceremony.
  • Signet ring. Married individuals wear this ring on their finger as a sign of their union on a day-to-day basis. It is usually a simple gold or silver band.
  • Seal ring. Medieval kings often wore a ring with the royal coat of arms, which they used as a seal to certify the authenticity of documents.
