WHAT ARE BRACELETS?

Bracelets are a adornment accessory in the shape of a hoop that serves as decoration for the wrists. Its counterpart for the ankle is called 'anklet'.

A accessory similar to bracelets is the bangle. Bangles tend to be more ornate than bracelets and are usually worn above the wrist, closer to the elbow, and are larger in size.

Humans have been adorning their wrists with bracelets for millennia. This type of accessory has been found on mummies from Ancient Egypt, in European burials from the Bronze Age, and in reliefs of figures from the ancient Assyrian Empire. The oldest specimens date back to the Neolithic period.

Below, we show examples of the types of bracelets worn by our ancestors:

  • The Egyptians wore cylindrical bracelets made of two pieces and adorned with inlaid gemstones and emblems of all types.
  • The bracelets of the Phoenicians had the shape of open rings whose ends were adorned with animal heads.
  • The Greeks and Romans wore both circular and spiral bracelets, often imitating the shape of a snake and with adornments such as precious stones and medallions.
  • Hindu women of nobility profusely adorned their bodies, including their arms, where they used multiple bracelets and bangles.
  • The upper classes of the Byzantine Empire often wore bangles.
  • The use of bracelets was very scarce in Europe during the Middle Ages except for the peoples of the north. Knights and the upper classes began to wear them again starting from the 15th century.

WHAT IS A JEWEL?

A jewel, also known as a gem, is an ornamental object used as body adornment by humans for millennia.

Besides serving an aesthetic function, jewels are also objects that display the social status one holds or the social class to which one belongs. In addition, the shape of jewels can communicate belonging to a religion, political party, family, institution, ideology, and much more.

Finally, in many cultures, jewels have served for religious purposes, ritualistic functions, or as amulets for good luck or protection.
