WHAT IS A CANOTIER HAT FOR WEDDINGS?

The canotier (also called boat hat or gondolier hat) is a straw hat with a straight, flat crown and a short, flat and stiff brim, adorned with a colored ribbon. Although different, it is similar to the Cordobes hat. Wearing a canotier hat for weddings is a guarantee of success.

The canotier is a hat made with braided straw. Once the three parts of the hat (top, crown, and brim) are separately made, they are then joined together using caoutchouc. At the base of the crown, it has a colored ribbon that, in the past, used to represent a school, rowing crew, or institution.

This hat became popular in Europe at the end of the 19th century. It was part of the attire of the Venetian gondoliers, who adorned the hat with a long ribbon called 'nastro del doppio' to differentiate themselves from naval officers. However, it became fashionable in France at the same time as canoeing or 'du canotage' in French, which gave rise to the name of this hat.

Italian immigrants brought this type of hat to the US, where its use was very common during the first half of the 20th century.

Due to its material, this hat is ideal to wear in summer, whether it's for sailing, sports, picnics, hikes, or any formal event. Both women and men have worn them, being a sign of status at the height of their popularity.

As a curiosity, the fashion designer Coco Chanel rose to fame thanks to hats of this style. Her visit to a racetrack is well known, where she attended dressed with a canotier hat and a simple tailor-made suit, at a time when feathers, padding, and corsets were still fashionable.
