What is Wonderflex?
Wonderflex ® is a thermoplastic - a type of plastic that can be softened under low heat to mold and create sculptural forms. It is hard, strong and sticky when heated, so it easily attaches to other fabrics and surfaces.
Wonderflex ® contains three elements:
A smooth white polymer surface, which can be painted.
A polyester mesh, which works as a structural reinforcement.
A glue activated by heat, which makes Wonderflex adhere to other surfaces.
This makes it perfect for molding on hat lasts or other structures.
Wonderflex ® becomes moldable at temperatures of 70-80 º C
It can be activated with dry or wet heat, so you can use a hair dryer or hot air gun; an oven, microwave or by immersion in hot water.
Industrial heat guns are the most popular method, since they allow for greater control. However, Wonderflex ® can not be heated with fire.
After heating, Wonderflex ® will remain soft for about 2-3 minutes before it is activated. They can also be reheated and reshaped, so if you are not satisfied with the shape you have created, heat it up and try again!
Wonderflex ® can be easily cut with scissors or a knife.
It can be stretched, since it retains a uniform thickness, due to the fabric base.
If you are painting Wonderflex ®, we recommend that you use a primer (such as plaster) or sand the surface before applying the color, as this material may be left rough after being shaped.
